Gaming can be a rewarding and fun hobby. Many people take their gaming hobby one step further by streaming and creating gaming content for YouTube and other social media platforms. If you’re a gamer and a streamer, then chances are you’ve spent hours editing your videos. Editing your own content can be extremely fun – but it can also become extremely taxing. If you struggle to support your mental wellness while you’re gaming and editing your videos, it becomes even more daunting. If you’re swimming in deadlines and half-finished videos, the fun, enjoyment, and passion tend to fade away – but it doesn’t have to be that way. Whether you like to stream casually in your free time or plan on turning gaming into your full-time job, let’s look at some ways you can support your mental health and wellness as a gamer, streamer, and content creator.

Why Is Mental Wellness So Important When Editing Gaming Videos?

Before we get started, let’s discuss why taking care of your mental health and wellness is important when gaming and editing gaming videos. While gaming can be an extremely fun and immersive hobby, too much gaming can be a problem. When people spend too much time playing video games, they spend too little time attending to other areas of their life, such as school, work, and relationships. This can be detrimental in a variety of ways, including worsening anxiety, decreasing people’s motivation, and more. Many people who are spend time dedicated to video games do not realize this may be a problem. Unfortunately, this leads to mental wellness taking a beat. Even if you don’t have a video game habit, it’s important to stay aware of your feelings while playing and editing gaming videos. Casual gamers, dedicated streamers, and full-time eSports players can all fall victim to the detriments of spending too much time with gaming.

Tips For Supporting Your Mental Wellness When Editing Gaming Videos

There is no one-size-fits-all way to support your mental wellness while gaming and editing your gaming videos; everyone is different, and so are the ways in which you take care of yourself, your mind, and your body. In this article, we’ll go over a few of the best strategies to help you keep your mental wellness in tip-top shape. While we recommend familiarizing yourself with all of these tips and trying them out, some might help you more than others, and that is completely okay!

Pay Attention to Your Body Language

It’s important to pay attention to your mood and your own body language when playing games, especially if you tend to show your face on camera while playing games or recording videos. When you’re in a good mood, try looking at the camera and smiling – this is a great way to boost your mood even further. When you’re in a bad mood, don’t force yourself into positivity by forcing yourself out of it! Instead of trying to look happy on camera (and making yourself miserable), take some time off every now and then; go outside for some fresh air or do something else productive.

One problem many gamers face is not noticing when they’re feeling upset, tired, or agitated. Therefore, it is important to listen to your body while you game, stream, and edit videos. Here are a few questions you can ask yourself as you work to determine whether you need a break:

  • Am I feeling hungry or thirsty right now?
  • Am I feeling too tired mentally or physically to continue?
  • How does each part of my body feel right now? Is there any tension or anxiety?
  • Am I still in a good mood, and if I am not, what is my mood? How is it affecting me right now and the way I edit my videos?

Set A Consistent Schedule

Setting a consistent schedule can help keep your mind on task and prevent you from overworking yourself. If you plan on becoming a full-time streamer, keep up with a regular schedule and edit your videos in a timely manner. This way you don’t find yourself scrambling to edit them ten minutes before you promised your viewers an upload. Plan out the tasks required to complete multiple video edits to help you stay on track. To prevent burn out, only work during your scheduled work hours. Be sure to schedule in some down time to relax and recharge.

Find Supportive Friends

Gaming and streaming can become lonely, even if gaming is your favorite hobby. Talking about your mental health is important, but it’s also important to know what you need from friends and find a supportive friend group. You can find friends in gaming clubs, at school or at work, or even in Discord servers online. Friends can be the people who listen and make sure you’re okay, or they can be the ones who are there for you when things get tough.

Take Breaks Regularly

To support your mental wellness, become aware of how you feel and take care of your body. If you’re feeling overwhelmed or stressed out, take a break! You can do this by taking a walk, stretching or breathing deeply for 5 minutes. Taking care of your body also includes eating well. Choose healthy snacks, like peanut butter with crackers, fruit, or hummus with vegetables over highly processed foods with added fats and sugars. If all else fails and you’re still feeling exhausted after a break, you should listen to your body and rest. Napping is always an option—just don’t forget about your videos when it comes time for editing again!

Don’t Let Gaming and Editing Run Your Life

Gaming is a great way to stay in touch with friends and family – and even a great career for some – but it can also be a distraction from the people we’re meant to be spending time with. If you’re playing games that require you to spend long hours with your virtual friends, it takes away time for real-world relationships. If gaming is getting in the way of your social life, or if it seems like it’s making things worse instead of better (e.g., “I don’t have time for my girlfriend because I’m too busy playing video games”), try taking breaks from gaming and creating gaming videos for just one day each week—or even once every two weeks!

Taking Care of Your Mental Health While Gaming

Whether you’re a casual gamer, a dedicated streamer or content creator, it’s important to take care of yourself while gaming and editing your gaming videos for YouTube, Twitch, and other platforms. Be sure to take breaks regularly, eat healthy snacks, and work on a consistent schedule so you don’t overwhelm yourself and stay on top of your mental health.
